Over the holidays, I spent some time on the beach, and realized that I need a dedicated beach/water hat. But not just any cap will do. I’ve never been a fan of trucker-style hats, which seem to be everywhere and perhaps I’m the only person who doesn’t like them. I consulted my on-water expert, which is my husband. He spends a good percentage of his time out on his board and boat, so I figure he’s done a lot of gear testing ov er the years.

His recommendation: the Stellar Wicking Hat.

Stellar USA is best known for making innovative kayaks, surf skis, paddles, and accessories. Unless you’re a kayaker, it’s possible that you haven’t run across this brand. But paddle people know what works for them on the water.

The Wicking Hat is extremely lightweight, weighing in at 4 ounces. The fit is snug, without discomfort. The hat is adjustable, and the elastic is moderately stretchy, so once I’ve made an adjustment, I rarely have to alter it. I’ve been surprised by the cap’s ability to stay on my head, regardless of how much the wind is blowing.

The hat material is a tightly woven mesh that breathes well but offers excellent sun protection. The brim is solid and keeps its shape well. When my hat has gotten wet, by rain, water splashes, or even sweat, it dries quickly. The interior is rimmed with cozy terrycloth, to wick sweat and keep it from dripping in your eyes.

The Stellar Wicking Hat has become my default on-water (and on-beach) hat. I keep one at home and another in my go-bag for trips that will take me on water-based adventures. It comes in white (pictured), black, teal, and blue, and lists for $18 on the Stellar site.
