The Birkenstock Gizeh is an iconic sandal that has a loyal fanbase reason. Not only are Birkenstocks exceptionally designed, they are also something of a timeless fashion statement. Extremely comfortable and versatile, they are my default airport shoe as the thong design makes it easy to slip on and off my feet. I also make sure to pack a spare set to switch off during my travels.
This brand is famous for its trademark footbed that is made from a latex milk taken from the bark of the rubber tree. That is then processed into an adhesive and is combined with cork granules. This recipe creates a flexible base with great tensile strength and is what gives the sandal such a long lifespan. The quality footbed edge is a staple of this brand as it acts as a barrier to protect the toes.
Every feature has been carefully thought out. Even the soles are shock absorbent, lightweight, and help to balance out uneven terrain when walking. The soles will also only break down on one side to minimize poor posture due to the wear and tear of the sandal. I find the moisture absorbing attributes of the cork extremely useful. My feet breathe really well, and there is never any odor, even after a hot sweaty day of hiking.
The Birkenstock Gizeh straps come in many colors and materials such as leather, nubuck, and suede. Those who are looking for vegan or animal free options can get it in Birko Flor, which is made from soft acrylic and polyamide felt fibers available in a leather or nubuck textures. There is also EVA which is an ethylene vinyl acetate that is both fashionable and functional as its glossy finish has barrier properties, is stress-crack resistant, and has virtually no odor.
One of the main reasons I always have a Birkenstock in my wardrobe is that they are designed to mold to my feet. This sandal has been expertly designed, but in my experience, the inner and outer longitudinal-arch supports, as well as the heel-cup need time to adjust and get broken in.
They key to creating the best experience is to make sure you choose the right size and width of shoe. You want your feet to be as close to the perimeter of the footbed edge.
