If you want a camping pillow that feels more like a scaled-down bed pillow than a stiff inflatable, the REI Campwell Camp Pillow is one of the more comfort-focused options in PTG’s camping gear coverage. It is aimed at car campers and comfort-minded travelers who care more about sleep quality than shaving every possible ounce.

In this review, the main questions are simple: does it pack small enough to justify the space, does it stay supportive through the night, and is it a better fit for campsite comfort than thinner travel-pillow-style alternatives?

We’ve all seen folks lined up to board a plane with travel pillows of every shape and color, and even full-size bed pillows. I get it. It doesn’t matter where you are headed. Comfort is key.

That said, pillows need to be small and worth the space to make the cut when I’m on the move. Especially when I’m headed outside. Camping tends to come with a lot of gear, which equates too very little or no room to spare in your backpack or car.

REI Co-op Campwell Camp Pillow

REI Co-op’s Campwell Camp Pillow reminds me of a traditional bed pillow, just in a more pint-size package. When smooshed in its stuff sack the pillow measures 6.7 x 11.8 inches and weighs in at 14.5 ounces. When removed from the carry bag, it fluffs up instantly, expanding to 20 x 15 inches. (For comparison, a standard bed pillow measures 20 x 26 inches.)

If you’re searching for a firm pillow, this likely isn’t for you. Filled with reclaimed foam scraps, the pillow is on the softer side, but still supportive. The Campwell Camp Pillow comes with a washable and reversible pillowcase; one side is satin, the other fleece. When camping, I use the pillow along with REI Co-op’s Camp Dreamer Double Self-Inflating Deluxe Bed.

The REI Co-op’s Campwell Camp Pillow is available in two colors: Pebble Hunt Blue Shale and Iron Oxide. Cost is $29.95 on the Rei Co-op website.

Who This Camping Pillow Is Best For

The Campwell makes the most sense for car camping, cabin weekends, and travel setups where comfort matters more than minimal packed weight.
