We’re a family who loves outdoor adventure, but also has our share of technology. Not all of it comes into the field with us when we backpack, camp, and kayak, but we usually have at least one phone and charger in our gear. We all know that not all phone cases and cords are created equal when it comes to rugged dependability outdoors, which is why I was excited to try Lander’s new offerings.
The Powell is available for the iPhone 6 and 6+, as well as the Galaxy S6. What I love: it’s slim and light. What’s the point of having a thin phone if it’s incased in a pound of rubber or plastic? The Powell keeps its slim figure by utilizing a ridged back design. The ridges actually strengthen the case, giving the Powell durability without bulk. Despite the ridges’ bumpy feel, the phone still easily slides in and out of pockets or backpacks without issue. In addition to the ridges along the back of the case, there’s a raised bezel along the edge of the case and textured edges on the corners. I have found this to be just enough grip to easily grab my phone and hang onto it, even with gloves on.
What the Powell isn’t: It’s not waterproof, and there’s no screen protection (except for the raised bezel, which ensures the screen doesn’t touch surfaces like tabletops when set down). When I need true waterproofing protection, I still need to change out my case, but for day to day use in the outdoors, such as ski days, day hikes, and the like, I prefer not encasing my phone in bulk.
I opted for the clear Powell case, which prettily shows off my iPhone logo and phone color. It also comes in red, blue, and black. Best of all, it’s only $34.95…a good deal for a quality-built case these days. Find one on Amazon for a few bucks less.
