When the sun’s out, it’s tempting to let your skin drink in all the warmth without thinking much about the consequences. But as much as it may feel good, it’s not great to expose skin to the sun’s rays for too long. Sure, there’s sunscreen, but one of the best ways to block out harmful rays is with clothing.

My land-based adventures are plentiful, but I’m also on the water a lot. I’m always looking for a lightweight, long-sleeved top for great sun coverage without adding too much warmth. Lately, I’ve been wearing the Cotopaxi Sombra Sun Hoodie every time I go out on the water, but it’s also ideal for walking, hiking, and biking.

The adventure staple is made from 100% recycled polyester with a polygiene anti-odor finish, so you can wear it a couple of times before washing. The fabric adds UPF 50+ protection, so it’s ideal to pack in a bag and throw on over a tank when you’re hanging out outdoors, or wear when you’re on a land- or water-based adventure.

Flatlock seams on side panels won’t chafe your skin when you’re active, and the scuba-type hood provides a secure fit, so you don’t have to keep securing it when you’re on a paddleboard or a hiking trail. There are thumbholes for added coverage, which extends the sleeve to the base of your fingers.

The hoodie has contrast binding at the cuffs, hood, and bask-side seam. An additional stretch stash pocket at the back-side seam has a zipper, so you can secure a key, cash, cards, or lip balm, as necessary.

The women’s Sombra Sun Hoodie comes in sangria (pictured), coastal, smoke, nectar, sea glass, spice, and bone, and lists for $75 (although some colors are currently on sale for $42) on the Cotopaxi site. The men’s version comes in sea spray, cinder, faded brick, saltwater, deep ocean, pebble, and canyon and lists for $75 (although some colors are currently on sale for $42) on the Cotopaxi site.
