I’m an ocean girl, but lots of salt and sun exposure can thrash my hair. While I want to keep my hair protected, I also want to avoid using products that harm fish and coral reefs. Until a recent dive trip, I hadn’t found the right hair-care products.

But since then, I’ve been using Stream2Sea Leave-In Conditioner, even when I’m not in the ocean.

The conditioner has plant-based emollients to replenish your hair’s moisture, and the non-greasy formula leaves my hair soft and manageable—without tangles. The formula contains an antioxidant blend of green tea, tulsi, wakame, olive leaf; keratin and panthenol to strengthen your hair; and is scented (lightly) with natural fig and grapefruit aromas.

On top of it all, the conditioner has no microbeads, nanoparticles, parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, or synthetic fragrances. My skin is sensitive to some ingredients that are standardly used in hair-care products, and this conditioner has none of them. Not only is it safe for sensitive skin, but it’s also tested and proven safe for baitfish, freshwater fish, saltwater fish, and coral larvae.

The conditioner comes in a tube made from sugarcane resins, and the brand’s bottles are 97% post-consumer recycled content.

To use before swimming in any body of water, rinse your hair with fresh water and then apply the conditioner, which will give a protective coat to your hair follicles and help prevent breakage.

The Leave-In Hair Conditioner comes in 6-ounce tubes for $15.95 each, or get a 32-ounce bottle for $54.95. All are available, plus other excellent reef-safe hair and skin products on the Stream2Sea website.
