The Cross-Trek Collection from Granite Gear boasts that it is “undeniably all-terrain,” and you know what? They could not be more spot on. The Cross-Trek line offers 5 different travel bags ranging from a 36 Liter Backpack to a 32” Wheeled Duffel, but for this review we selected the most versatile of the range: the Granite Gear Cross-Trek 22”
As the name implies, the Granite Gear Cross-Trek 22” is actually two travel bags combined into one. In its complete form, the Cross-Trek 22” is a fully integrated rolling suitcase featuring multi- pocket organizers to consolidate small items, a Gear-Tec technology sleeve to protect laptops/tablets, heavy duty compression straps, and zippered dividing curtains to improve organizational options. These features ensure that the Cross-Trek is a useful standalone suitcase even without the zip-off backpack feature.
The zip-off section of the Cross-Trek is not the only part of the backpack that can be worn with shoulder straps. The main luggage has a hidden zipper on the bottom that, once unzipped, reveals shoulder straps for the entire bag. This, when coupled with the zip off day bag, makes the Cross-Trek 22” the optimal bag for longer multi-stop travel.
The removable 28 liter pack that easily zips off the main luggage is a specially designed bag that has the quality, durability, and comfort that you would expect from a standalone Granite Gear backpack. Its rugged construction, spacious three compartment interior, heavy duty zippers, and padded shoulder straps make the Cross-Trek a great day/multi-day pack.
Last week I took a two-day trip to Seattle for a fitness course. The trip was short enough that I obviously didn’t need the full combined luggage space of the Cross-Trek 22”, but it was ideal for just the pack portion of the bag. Using my Pro Packing Cubes, I easily packed my clothes, toiletries, and iPad and had more than enough room to spare. The pack was light, comfortable, and was perfect for a carry-on.
The versatility of the Granite Gear Cross-Trek 22” is what makes it such a practical and useful piece of luggage to own. Considering you are purchasing a bag that is on one hand a lightweight, smartly divided, and rugged roller luggage AND a day pack all in one. The level of versatility the Cross-Trek 22” offers is quite unique, and would be a great bag for anyone looking to be prepared for whatever their travels are going to throw at them.
The Cross-Trek 22″ is available from the Granite Gear official website, eBags.com, or Amazon.com and comes in three color variations: Black, Blue, and Red. With a pice of around $170.00, this versatile pack is definitely worth a look.
