This year’s speaker for the road: the Altec Lansing Mini H2O III speaker. This compact, affordable, and nearly indestructible speaker has gone through a lot this summer, from days at the lake with the teens to camping trips to travel days.
What we love: it weighs only a quarter of a pound, making it very easy to toss into a backpack on travel days, and it’s waterproof, dustproof, soundproof, and shockproof. Our favorite feature: it floats.
In other words, I’d wager your kids simply cannot destroy this speaker. Nor can your airline, or even the hot sun in your car. At least, it survived all these things in our travels. It’s solid and compact, and you get a carabineer for easy transport.
The sound quality is just ok, but for the price, I really didn’t expect to be blown away. It certainly gets the job done for general use poolside, in the car, at the picnic area, etc.
You get an onboard mic for speakerphone capability, if you want to use it in this way, and it is compatible with apple, android, tablets, and laptops.
Altec claims six hours of battery life, and we found this to be true in most cases. There’s a wireless range of 33 feet, which we found to be more than enough for our purposes.
