If you’re looking for a solar-powered light to take into the backcountry, on an international trip to a less developed country, or just into the backyard fort, you have a lot of products to choose from. The Waka Waka Power+ is not only fun to say, but packs a pretty powerful punch, ticking not one or two, but three needs off the wish list in one product.
First, the Waka Waka Power+ is a light source. Though only about the size of a smart phone, it features a flip stand so it can be used as either a flashlight or a lantern. It’s ready to be hung from the ceiling, if table space is not available, or on any counter or desktop. There are four light settings, from 5 to 75 lumen (super bright, bright, medium, and energy save). For regular use for reading or cooking in the dark, I never found the need for anything brighter than the regular ‘bright’ setting). As a bonus, there’s also an SOS emergency beacon mode.
Secondly, the Power+ is a solar charger. It’s solar panel can be fully charged after 12 hours in the sun. I wish it could be charged in less time, as I usually use the Power+ on backpacking trips where I don’t have the luxury of sitting around camp, but it can be attached to a pack to get some rays on the go. (I found I got less charge that way, since I was moving and didn’t have direct sunlight the whole way, but it’s still a good alternative.)
Once charged, the Power+ offers 150 hours of light (depending on your settings of course) and can charge a smart phone fully in two hours. Indicator lights let you know when the Power+ battery is fully charged by the sun, and how much battery life is left. You get USB in and out connectors.
Thirdly, the Power+ gives back, which I really appreciate. With every purchase, a solar light is given to the International Rescue Committee (IRC), to provide to a child or family living without access to electricity. Even better, you get an unique Give Code included in your packaging, which lets you direct where in the world your Buy-One-Give-One contribution will go.
We’ve been using the Waka Waka while backpacking where we can take on a little extra weight (it does weigh about 7 ounces), and we also have one stashed in our emergency supplies; it will be essential for power and light should we be cut off from the grid. It sells for $79, and there’s also a solar powered light without charging capabilities for $39. Find the Power+ on Amazon as well for $79.
