Much of my life revolves around water, specifically the ocean. That means a lot of my outdoor gear is made to withstand weather conditions near oceans around the world, as well as water conditions on and below the surface.
A dive master recently turned me on to Waterlust clothing, and I’ve since tested out a few pieces. I’ve become a huge fan, and have purchased enough to own a small wardrobe for my water-based adventures.
Waterlust’s signature fabric is made from 88% certified recycled Repreve RPET (from post-consumer plastic bottles) and 12% Lycra, and knit with the perfect amount of stretch and compression. The fiber is anti-microbial and wicks moisture, and has UPF 50+ UV protection.
If you’re not yet familiar with the process that turns plastic bottles into fabric, it begins with collecting post-consumer plastic bottles at recycling facilities. Those bottles are washed and chopped into flake, which is melted and formed into chip, which in turn is melted and extruded into yarn.
You can shop by the clothing item you need, whether that’s leggings and rashguards or swimsuits and shorts. For diving, I love the leggings, with streamlined side pockets on both legs. They keep me warm in the water and protect my skin from stinging organisms while I’m enjoying myself down below. For time both in and out of the water, I enjoy the sun shirts and rashguards, which keep my skin protected from the sun. The shorts range from fitted 4” and 8” styles to drawstring.
Because Waterlust gives 5% of sales to high-impact research and education organizations that are experts in their specific fields, you can also shop by cause. Current causes are whale shark research. abalone restoration, tiger shark research, parrotfish protection, Floridan aquifer and springs, peacock mantis shrimp, invasive lionfish, coral conservation, sea turtle research, kelp forest restoration, spotted eagle ray research, coastal resiliency, and orca conservation.
Creative and fun materials ship with your order, so you can follow-up with some education about your chosen cause. Depending on the items you pick, prices vary, but there’s free shipping for orders over $150.
