You don’t have to be out camping to appreciate the challenge of a hot meals when on the road. When you’re camping, you need to bring food and a stove (and probably cookware and utensils, as well).

When you’re checking in late to your hotel after a 15-hour flight and the restaurant is closed, well, you’re either out of luck, or you need to buck up and go in search of something to eat.

How much easier would it be to have a healthy, shelf-stable, self-heating, ready-to-eat meal that’s comprised of ingredients that aren’t packed full of preservatives? That’s what you have with Omeals.

Omeals come in a variety of styles, from Maple Brown Sugar Oatmeal to Vegetarian Chili, Chicken Creole with Brown Rice to Turkey and Mashed Potatoes. There are even sides, like Smoked Cheese Bites or White Rice.

I’ve tasted my way through a few, and each one has been about as good as I can make back home, when I have a whole kitchen at my disposal. I was a little skeptical of the Smoked Cheese Bites (there are also Original and Honey Habanero varieties), because the texture is almost like munching on almonds. But the taste is exactly what I’d expect: smoked cheese.

All the Omeals bags are engineered with layers of different materials and a sealant to allow an efficient heating process. Rip the top of the heater pack off, and place the heater into your Omeals bag.

The heater is much like what you use with hand and foot warmers during ski season. Add 4-6 ounces of water, seal the bag, and let it set and heat (different types of meals will have different heating times, all listed in easy-to-follow instructions on the bag).

The bags are very hot while steaming, so don’t expect to just hold it in your hands. When the heating time has elapsed, carefully open the bag and let it stand for a minute before enjoying your hot meal. It’s that simple.

The water you use doesn’t mix with the food; it’s merely used to help heat it. That’s less pressure on what kind of water you find, and it’s not necessary to use filtered water because you won’t ingest it. As long as the liquid is non-flammable, you can even use soda or iced tea.

A package containing a napkin and spoon is included in the Omeals bag, so you don’t need to worry about finding utensils in order to eat the meals.

I haven’t tried these in place of airplane meals, mainly because when the heating process is initiated, steam comes from the bag. Considering how edgy some travelers and airline staff may be, this could potentially cause you to get a little more attention than you might want.
