Weighing in at just under 8 pounds, the Black Hole Wheeled Duffle from Patagonia is an impressive bag. We loaded a long weekend of clothes for a family of four into the Black Hole Duffle and headed to warmer weather.
The internal body is simply designed with two compression tie downs and two zippered mesh pockets on the lid. The lining is 100% recycled polyester with a polyurethane coating. We were able to comfortably pack 4 day’s worth of clothing, shoes and necessities for a family of four into the Black Hole Duffle. No one had to sit on it to get it zippered up! The zippered opening to the internal pocket is large and allows for a wide exposure when packing and getting your gear organized just right.
The shell of the bag is also made from 100% postconsumer recycled polyester ripstop with a TPU-film laminate. Both fabrics are coated with a DWR finish as well to keep your gear clean and dry.
Product Testing at it’s Finest
We put the outer shell the test by literally throwing the Black Hole Wheeled Duffle down the street, kids were instructed to kick it and we even let them shoot the whole bag with the hose to test the water permeability. Then we checked in on to our plane and let the luggage guys do their own level of damage. The Black Hole Wheeled Duffle still looks brand new!
For a fabric that is made from 100% recycled fibers and bluesign approved, I was a little skeptical on the strength and durability. I am happy to report we had zero issues with the performance of the product.
In 2007 Patagonia was the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign system partners. In their efforts to reduce the impact on people and the environment, Patagonia has been working to create more sustainable products that are guaranteed to last a lifetime so the planet can, too.
All components on the outside worked great. The handle extends far enough that it was ergonomic to pull the Black Hole duffle behind us. Even the kids could pull it with ease due to the two levels of the telescoping handle and the ride was smooth with the large wheels. The daisy chains on the exterior worked perfectly for attaching additional gear to the wheeled duffle or could be used to help tie down the bag for transport.
Make ’em Jealous
My husband was so impressed with the bag that he took it to his Guy’s Trip in Whistler. It held all his biking gear, including body armour and clothes for the seven day trip. When the 5 other guys were shoving their bags into trash bags due to the rain fall, Chris threw his into the back of the truck and was ready to roll with dry gear. They didn’t give him a hard time for the deep plum color because the bag outperformed all of theirs.
100% of the Black Hole Wheeled Duffle is recycled polyester fabric, polyester lining and nylon webbing. What a great gift to environmentally friendly travelers like you and I!
We highly recommend this product for the occasional traveler to the hard-core gear junkie. Patagonia’s Black Hole Wheeled Duffle comes in 40L, 70L and 100L and 4 colors. We reviewed the 70L in the deep plum color. The color is represented well on the website. At the time of this review the Black Hole Wheeled Duffle 70L retails for $329.00 and can be purchased on the Patagonia website.
Safe Travels!
