When you think of the storied Woolrich brand, you probably picture sweaters, wool jackets, and hats to keep the New England cold at bay. They do make all that stuff, and make it very well, but they do produce items meant for warm weather as well. A while back I reviewed their Territory Polo and next up is a button-up shirt that can switch to long sleeves or short: the Cross Country Pattern Tech Shirt.
There are a few major brands that dominate the market for these convertible travel shirts, and we’ve reviewed a variety of them here, but this Woolrich one compares well in features and is very competitively priced at $59 list.
It’s got all the features you’d expect from this kind of travel shirt: a button/loop system to keep the sleeves in place when rolled up, mesh lining backed by venting slits in the back, a loop for hanging it to dry, and hidden buttons to keep the collar in place. The two chest pockets have Velcro on the flaps and each has an additional secret pocket for security: the left one reached from the side and secured by Velcro, the other inside with a zipper. (Pair these with some Pick Pocket Proof Pants and you’ll be one hard person to rob!)
This being a shirt meant for travelers, it’s made of quick-dry nylon, offers high sun protection, and will wick away sweat.
I like the look of this shirt and it’s a welcome departure from the usual earth tones, but the “wrinkle-resistant” properties were the one weak point. Woolrich obviously uses a different kind of nylon than Columbia or ExOfficio. You can stuff most of theirs into a ball in your backpack and still have very few wrinkles when unpacking. Kind of freaky how good they look even after months of travel. This one has more of a mildly rumpled morning-after look to it after washing or unpacking. That’s not the end of the world, especially considering the price and that it’s patterned anyway, but if you are a stickler for being truly wrinkle-free, this one might need some shower steam at least before going out for the night.
This convertible shirt is very light at 2.5 ounces and is quite comfortable. It comes in five colors and fits well without being either too tight or too baggy.
