BioGreen Biodegradable Plastic Bottles
One of my kitchen cabinets is a repository for dozens of plastic (and a handful of metal) water bottles my family has picked up over the years. I’ve got all shapes and sizes — from 32-oz Nalgenes to tiny 8-oz Tupperware sippers for preschoolers. But none are as environmentally friendly as my new BioGreen Bottles.
Amazingly, these silky soft plastic bottles are completely biodegradable. That means the EcoPure low density poly ethylene turns into humus (bio-mass) and methane (bio-gas) after a few years in common anaerobic landfills. Unlike corn- or startch-based plastics, heat and humidity don’t activate the degradation process, so they are long lasting. And the bottles are recyclable (plastic recycle symbol #4; which doesn’t help in my rural area, since we only recycle #1 and #2).
I’ll be honest; I’m not the most “green-educated” Mom around. What appeals to me most about the BioGreen bottles is the awesome child’s version. The “Mini” 14-oz for kids (at left) is the perfect size for lunchboxes or for packing in children’s carry-ons for plane travel. Young kids typically don’t need large bottles of liquid, so this “just right” size limits waste. Each bottle style comes in five different colors with unique artwork; the Mini shows a nature scene colored in blue and green kid-like scrawls. My two children — ages 7 and 9 — give them the thumbs’ up, too.
The other four styles hold as much as 32 ounces. I dig the sporty 30-oz “Hollywood” version, with a sleek, hourglass-like shape that allows for easy grabbing access while running, biking or hiking.
Purchase the BioGreen Biodegradable Mini Bottle on Amazon.com for about $4. BioGreen Bottles are also sold at bicycle and sporting goods shops, as well as fitness centers and health food stores.
