Naturopathica Holistic Health Vitamin K Brightening Eye Serum
If ever there was a time when I needed some eye-brightening help it was last week, when I drove nearly 7 hours to Salt Lake City, enjoyed three days of trade-show mayhem and late-night parties, drove nearly 7 hours home, then unpacked and repacked for an extended- family weekend in Vail (where an on-duty Grandma/babysitter meant one very late night out in this mountain town about two hours from my house). Lots of travel and little sleep equaled high susceptibility to bags under my eyes — more than usual, anyway.
To combat those bags and dark circles under my tired eyes, I packed Naturopathica Holistic Health’s Vitamin K Eye Brightening Serum. I thought the treatment might be cooling, similar to the gel-like cotton Vitamin C Illuminating Eye Pads I reviewed last year. But the Naturopathica product isn’t as refreshing as it is moisturizing.
In fact, when I put too much of the serum on under my eyes, without covering it up with make-up or powder, my husband asked, “What’s that shiny stuff on your face?” I quickly learned to only dab on a very small amount, especially when I also realized that the .5-oz blue bottle retails for $72. (Note to users: don’t push the pump down all the way, otherwise you’ll dispense much more than needed, wasting the precious formula!)
And, like the other eye treatment I tested, I didn’t notice any visible change to the skin under my eyes — though, the key ingredients (Vitamin K, Mica and Silica) are purported to reduce skin discolorations and refract light to even skin tone.
But what I do like about this Naturopathica product is that it does moisturize so well, and the chamomile oil — another key ingredient — reminds me of that fabulous, relaxing scent you get a whiff of when you enter a quality spa. (You know, when the smell of the spa itself begins to put you into chill-out mode before you even lie down a massage table.) So, psychologically, I liked putting the serum under my eyes; I’m also certain the silky finish is only doing good things to the sagging skin in that area of my face. Since I live at a high altitude and I’m exposed to the dry air on planes a lot, it just makes sense to keep my skin as lubed up with natural ingredients as possible.
I’ll keep using the Naturopathica Vitamin K Brightening Eye Serum; the small bottle is so easy to tuck into a toiletry bag. I’ll use it in moderation, though, to make the expensive bottle last.
Purchase the $72 eye serum on the Naturopathica website, along with cleansers, mists, moisturizers, masks and more beauty products.

Aspen Fashion Week: Juice Beauty “Organics to Go” Kit with Hydrating Mist
When I picked up my swag bag for Aspen Fashion Week on Sunday, I was delighted to find a Juice Beauty “Organics to Go” kit of five facial products perfectly sized for travel. Even better, the kit is not a specially made package just for this event or other gift bags: you can actually by the combination of products from the Juice Beauty website for $29.
Inside the “Organics to Go” recycled-fiber box is Cleansing Milk, Green Apple Peel, Antioxidant Serum, Hydrating Mist and Nutrient Moisturizer, plus a thin but incredibly soft organic bamboo washcloth. Each of the products comes in a 2-oz. or less container, so tossing it all into a carry-on for plane travel is no problem; there is plenty of each product to use as part of your morning and evening beauty routine for a week’s trip.
I’ve now played with all of these products (except for the Green Apple Peel, only because I haven’t had time to deal with doing a behind-the-ear patch test to make sure the hydroxy acid didn’t irritate my skin), and the item that really stands out is the fabulous Hydrating Mist.
Its top ingredients are organic, antioxidant-rich white and red grape juices, aloe vera and grapeseed oil, and the idea is to spray the concoction on your face as needed throughout the day for “exhilarating refreshment.” I can testify that it works. This week, when I’ve needed a pick-me-up after lunch (and before heading to the bus stop to pick up my kids), I spray a little organic goodness on my face and it makes me feel more awake and energized.
The scent is divine: fresh and clean, like an aroma you’d find in a top-notch spa. I’m absolutely packing my small container of Hydrating Mist on my next plane trip to help hydrate and balance my skin before, during and after flight. If long security lines or grumpy ticket agents get me down, one shot of the Hydrating Mist and I’ll be transported to a massage table (in my mind anyway).
All of Juice Beauty’s skincare products are made with 100 percent organic juice, and they are free of petroleum, pesticides, paraben preservatives, artificial colors, synthetic fragrances.
If you fall in love with the trial-size version of this nifty product like I did, purchase a 6.75-oz container of Hydrating Mist to keep on your desk or on your kitchen counter (or wherever you spend most of your day) for $22.

Elizabeth Grant Vitamin C Illuminating Eye Pads
I’m the first to admit I am not a beauty-products connoisseur. I have my cleansing and moisturizing regimen prescribed by my friendly local esthetician (whom I don’t see nearly enough for facials), but I’m not familiar with many product lines. Although Elizabeth Grant has sold her moisturizing creams since 1958, evolving her home-based business into a global, multi-million corporation, I hadn’t heard of the brand before a marketing representative contacted me to review Vitamin C Eye Pads. It may be just that I’m not sophistiated — or wealthy — enough to use this line: a small jar of Caviar Night Crème is $130!
Her Vitamin C Illuminating Eye Pads at $35 for a six-pack of pairs are not inexpensive either, but if you are prone to “tired eyes” while traveling, or are facing some long travel days on your next trip, you might consider trying this product. (Or putting it on your holiday wish list.)
I sampled the eye pads during a five-night, whirlwind trip to Belize last month, and can confirm that the little cotton pieces infused with good stuff like chamomile, Vitamin C and Grant’s trademarked, moisturizing “miracle blend, Torricelumn™, definitely felt refreshing on my under-eye skin. The wet pads are sticky, so you don’t have to lie down while wearing them, though 15 minutes of meditation might also help your eyes look more refreshed anyway.
According to marketing materials, the Vitamin C in the eye pads naturally brighten, lighten and even the appearance of under-eye skin. I didn’t see this change in the mirror — nor did I see a visible difference between eyes when I tested just one pad at a time, for comparison’s sake (i.e. I still had a bit of puffiness and dark circle under each eye).
However, even though I didn’t see a change, I absolutely felt better after using the eye pads: more wide-eyed, more refreshed and more “awake” all around.
The eye pads come in convenient, thin foil packs that don’t take up much room in your toiletry bag or carry on. I think they’d be a great way to re-energize after a long-haul flight — say from Denver to Maui or New York to Frankfurt. Think about them, too, for stocking stuffers during this holiday season of giving!
