Connecting on the Road: D-Link’s DAP-1350 Wireless N Pocket Router and Access Point
One standard piece of gear that’s always in my carry-on bag is a travel router. I’ve used it mainly in hotels that had only wired Internet access, turning it into a wireless signal that could be (more conveniently) used anywhere in the room. Plus, there are some other tricks such as creating a wireless network that can be shared with others or adding Wi-Fi to a piece of gear that’s network-ready.
I’ve been using another manufacturer’s model, which has been discontinued. So I sought out the latest and greatest for on-the-go networking and am very pleased with D-Link’s DAP-1350 Wireless N Pocket Router and Access Point.
I’m no networking genius, but still had no trouble setting this up. The signal is plenty strong to cover just about any size of hotel room and beyond.
The DAP-1350 can be used three different ways—as a router, connecting to a wired modem and creating a wireless signal for your computer; in access-point mode, plugging into a router to add Wi-Fi to an existing wired network; and in wireless client mode, it can be used to turn a desktop computer or gaming console into a Wi-Fi device for connection to a wireless network.
The DAP-1350 does all this securely and speedily. It supports WPA and WPA2 encryption. And the Wireless N technology with multiple antennas gives the DAP-1350 greater speed and range compared to older-generation portable routers and access points.
The beauty is also in the size. The DAP-1350 is smaller than my HTC Tilt 2 smartphone. It also comes with a nice carrying case that also holds an AC power adapter. But if you don’t have access to AC power, here’s another excellent feature for travelers—the D-Link can be powered by a USB cable connected to a PC.
Even with all these features, the price won’t break the bank. The DAP-1350 retails for $99.99, with discounts available from Amazon.
When it’s time to take the network on the road, D-Link’s DAP-1350 Wireless N Pocket Router and Access Point is an excellent way to stay connected.
