Review: 5.11 Tactical Rush 72 Backpack

tactical-rush-72As I’ve said in previous reviews, you don’t have to be a member of a SWAT team to enjoy the bags and other gear made by 5.11 Tactical. And the same is true of the company’s Rush 72 Backpack.

5.11 Tactical specializes in gear for law enforcement and fire/EMS workers. And this rugged gear also holds up well for other travelers.

Like other 5.11 bags, the Rush 72 is well-built of tough, water-resistant nylon. But it’s also well-designed, with internal dividers, webbing on the front and sides and a handy grab handle at the top. The design comes from a special operations combat veteran.

I like the accessory pockets and there’s a fleece-lined slot for sunglasses, too. The back is padded and hip pads also help make it comfortable to carry. There’s also a hydration pocket and two side pockets that run the length of the bag and can carry large water bottles and other items.

The Rush 72 measures 23″ high by 15″ wide by 8″ deep. For most travelers, that would be large enough for a trip of three days or more. It would also fit in the overhead on most commercial flights.

This backpack would be at home on outdoor treks, leisure trips and business travel. The Run 72 Backpack is reasonably priced at $149.95. It’s available in three colors—black, brown and green.

Overall, 5.11 Tactical’s Rush 72 Backpack offers a lot of high-end features, but without a high-end price tag. And its tough construction is a plus for travelers.

Review: 5.11 Tactical DC Roller Travel Bag

DC_Roller_web

For the past few months, I’ve had a chance to bounce around the DC Roller Travel Bag from 5.11 Tactical, the guys who make gear for SWAT teams and other public-safety types. And while a lot of companies are making roller bags these days, 5.11 Tactical’s entry is reasonably-priced and well-made, even for those of us who won’t be carrying SWAT gear.

This bag is designed for carry-on use on airplanes—an important consideration in these days when airlines are boosting their baggage fees. The official measurement is 22″x14″10″, which technically is one inch over the carry-on size limit imposed by most major U.S. airlines such as American, Delta and Continental.

But the 10″ depth (some airlines specify a maximum of 9″) shouldn’t he a problem in most cases. If the bag gets checked in a sizer, it should compress enough to fit. Most airlines don’t check that closely if the bag doesn’t look too bulky. The bag is lightweight and made of rugged nylon. The DC Roller Travel Bag has two front pockets—one could easily be used for a laptop.

Inside, there are nice features to keep things organized, including a mesh pocket, top hanging pocket, a laundry bag for dirty clothes and an oversized shoe bag. A zipper also allows it to be expanded by 2″ for bigger loads.

The bag rolls smoothly on oversized wheels.

The DC Roller is large enough for several days of traveling and can easily adapt to carrying gear, clothes and whatever else you need. Plus, it’s reasonably priced at $139.99.

This isn’t the first time we’ve recommended 5.11 Tactical Gear. I’ve also enjoyed using their Side Trip Briefcase, which I reviewed earlier, for short trips. And my colleague, Tim, really likes their Light for Life flashlight.

Whether you’re packing for a tactical assault or a weekend vacation, 5.11 Tactical’s DC Roller Travel Bag deserves a look.
