SwitchFlops Interchangeable Sandals

By Kara

Remember the post I did on Zuzatz interchangeable sandals this summer? Loved the concept, but the execution was lacking a bit when it came to comfort. I’ve since discovered a casual flip-flop whose straps can be mixed and matched, and they’re comfy, too! Bottom line: Lindsay Phillips’ SwitchFlops are awesome.

dflt_lulu-navy34I received a pair of the Lulu in blue to sample (pictured left). The Lulu ($35), with a 1-inch wedge heel, as well as the Taylor ($39), with a 1.5-inch wedge heel, come with a whimsical polka-dot strap that attaches to the sandal with Velcro.

The fun comes when you start shopping for additional straps to match different outfits. There are dozens and dozens of others you can buy to mix and match with the sandal. I’m partial to the preppy grosgrain stripes, but there are satiny ruffles, metallic faux snakeskin, denim herringbone and shiny patent leather. Each has a complementary center button, rhinestone or even plastic flower. Darling! Straps retail from $12 to $15, depending on the style.

The little strap between the toe is made of fabric, so it doesn’t cause any painful rubbing (the way the Zuzatz bothered me). I’ve found the colorful straps easy to remove and put on as needed. My nine-year-old daughter has a pair, as well, and she can line up the Velcro straps to switch them in and out easily, too. I think my only complaint is that the sandal only runs in whole sizes. My size 8 is just a smidgen too small (though wearable); I’d prefer an 8.5 to have just a bit more room in the heel. (But a 9 would be too big.)

switchstrapsAlso, I was wearing the sandals outside and tripped on a cement sidewalk. A  little piece of the foam near my toes was gouged out. Be prepared for these flip flops to show some wear and tear if you plan on sporting them all summer long or daily on a week-long vacation in the Caribbean this winter. (Me? I’m packing them for three warm-weather trips I have planned in coming months!)

Lindsay Phillips — who conceived of this sandal style while she was in high school (brilliant girl) — has also introduced ballet flats with interchangeable decorative “snaps” at the toe, as well as little travel bags to carry shoes and straps.

I first saw SwitchFlops for sale at a boutique clothing store in a lake resort town in New Hampshire, but the entire collection is available online.

Gotta love interchangeable sandals, there are a lot of different brands these days, but switch flops are still the most comfortable, especially the Black ones.

The sandals looked very cute. But I like the second one because of its unique design. I also like the design of the mandy snap shoes.

When I first heard of these shoes I didn’t think I would ever wear them. Well I was wrong. I love them. They are comfortable and I love flipflops.
