Being such a pessimist and a paranoid person, my external drives have been my means for keeping my sanity and peace of mind intact. I had the horror of knowing what it feels like to lose every single photo in the blink of an eye. I can never allow that to happen again.

Facebook has turned out to be a great backup system for my friend. She lost all her files when her laptop crashed. WE were desperately trying to retrieve her files -- something ... anything! -- when I suddenly remembered how diligent she has always been about updating her Facebook albums. That's how she was able to gather copies of her good old photos. Whew! :) Her photos may not be complete anymore, but at least the ones she has left are those that are the best.

Data backup only made sense to me when I lost almost all of the photos I took of my newborn baby girl. Imagine my shock and panic when, upon turning on my laptop, the screen was just a complete blank! Now, I backup important files and photos in a USB drive, as well as in an external drive.

I experienced the same thing as Mark. I lost all data and files in my laptop in the blink of an eye. Thankfully, after a few minutes of panicking, I thought of Facebook and realized most of my stuff were in there. As soon as I got my laptop back on track, I downloaded as much as I can. My files are still incomplete (obviously I do not transfer everything onto Facebook), but at least my favorite ones were retrieved. Data backup is extremely important!

I purchased both the dedicated Rebit Save Me system (3/2009) and the multi-user Save Me system (Rebit shared disc system; purchased 1/2010) directly from Rebit. Both are in the latest software version to date (v. 3.0.1035.8778, for Windows XP, Service Pack 3 and Windows Vista). I have consistently had problems with the product. Points to consider:

1. It notoriously fails to operate, and this is difficult to discover without consulting the Rebit-SaveMe-Error log or the Rebit-SaveMe-Tray.exe.log. The icon will appear on your task bar, leading you to believe it is operational, unless you highlight it, at which point you (sporadically) see a message stating "your grace period has expired," despite repeatedly having re-entered the product activation code. Be prepared to get to know the ostensibly single customer support representative well, although his patience is short.
2. Check your C drive format first. This product works exclusively with as NTFS file system.
This is a product consumers were hungry for, and is great conceptually. As for reality, look for a more reliable alternative. Buy your own external HDD (ceaper), so at least you salvage something when the software fails.
