I packed a pair of Women’s Lake Lodge Twill Shorts by Mountain Khakis on my two-night jaunt to Ogunquit, Maine last week. In these Bermuda-length shorts, which I have in a preppy, salmon (“Summer Red”) hue, I fit right in with the rest of the New Englanders in this popular vacation spot. Better yet, I found the shorts delightfully lightweight (not as heavy as the MK Cargo Capris I wore this spring) and comfortable. The 98% cotton/2% Lycra blend offered a light stretch to the material, adding to their comfort. The shorts felt “worn in” as soon as I slipped them on, they are that soft.

I was actually hesitant to even try on these shorts, fearing that the long style wouldn’t be too becoming on middle-aged thighs. But, like the Cargo Capris, the Lake Lodge Twill Shorts are cut generously in the leg — plenty wide. Similarly, the shorts fit nicely on my waist — not too low, and not too high, with plenty of breathing room. I definitely appreciate the roomy front/side pockets and back pockets; one day I went sightseeing with just my point-and-shoot camera, my Droid phone, my chapstick and a few dollars and ID, and they all fit just fine in the front pockets.

Cute details include a notched hem, as well as a criss-cross belt loop in the back and accent stitching on the pockets. The closure is a sleek hook-and-eye fasteners. The shorts come in Summer Red, pretty Mint Julep, Classic Khaki, Chocolate and Navy. I’d recommend a pair of these hardy shorts to anyone who appreciates quality-made clothing — as well as conservative coverage when it comes to short length.
