On a camping or other outdoor excursion, it’s important to pack light (unless you’re glamping) instead of bringing along all the tools you think you’ll need. While multi-tools often solve that problem, packing every single possible useful thing into a small tool can make it too heavy to bring along. The Gerber Steady Tool not only keeps it light, it’s also a great buddy for your camera.
At 5.8 ounces, the Steady Tool is lightweight and compact for all the stainless-steel components it carries: a fine-edge blade, a serrated blade, needle-nose pliers, a bottle opened, wire cutters, three screwdrivers, a tripod, a camera/cell phone mount and a cell phone attachment (suction cup).
The suction cup for securing your cell phone to the tripod is surprisingly strong. There’s no need to worry that the phone will fall off after you let go. Unfortunately, the camera mount holds up to 12 ounces, so it won’t be that perfect tool for your big SLR. And I would have liked it more if the tripod legs were metal and not plastic.
The Steady Tool is a pretty handy size, as well. It can be tucked into your pack, or kept in its carrying case and affixed onto any strap or belt for quick access when you need it.
Gerber Steady Tool lists for $64 on the Gerber website. On Amazon, it’s $44.19.
