Cozy but Tough: Flannel-lined Pants from Mountain Khakis

By Tim L.

When it’s time to keep your legs as warm as your upper body, these flannel-lined pants from Mountain Khakis are a dream.

I’m a packing light evangelist, but when you’re going somewhere that’s really cold outside all the time, you’ve gotta break down and pack some heavier clothing that will keep you toasty warm. I don’t break out the long underwear unless I’ve got a day of skiing or sledding in the works, so these pants are great for no-fuss, comfortable warmth all the other times. I bought these a month ago and they’ve been my most-worn pants ever since.

Mountain Khakis is based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and they don’t mess around when it comes to quality and durability. Sure, these pants will set you back close to $90, but they’re made of thick cotton canvas and will probably outlast most everything else in your pants drawer.

Everything about these feels top-notch, from the heavy-duty YKK zippers to the bar-tac reinforcements to the triple-stitching throughout. They’ve got reinforced heel cuffs and six thick belt loops. I especially like the handy deep double pocket on the right side, for keeping the gadgets separated from keys and money. (The front one is a perfect size for a smart phone.)

No, these are not pants you’re going to stuff into a carry-on or take with you on a round-the-world journey. But if you’re going to Europe in the winter, on a ski trip, or on a vacation in the mountains somewhere, these Mountain Khaki flannel-lined pants will keep your legs warm and will stand up to conditions that would slaughter more fragile outerwear. If you’re cool enough, you might even end up looking like this guy…

These flannel-lined pants come in three different earth tone colors: that’s “pine” pictured at the top left, “yellowstone” on the man here. They’re meant to be true to size (“We don’t do vanity sizing,” a spokeswoman told me at the Outdoor Retailer show) and you can order them up by waist and length like jeans. I can’t wait to wear my Mountain Khaki Cargo Capris — still a little chilly here in Colorado, but will likely take them to two warm-weather destinations in March!

I agree these pants are too heavy for a carry on usually, but you might not need much else. I took mine on a ski trip last winter and wore them almost the whole time that I wasn’t on the slopes. Make these the ones you wear on the plane to get there and you’re set.
