We made sure to teach our kids how to light a fire with a flint striker very similar to this one. Though as you say, it's not as quick as matches, but in experienced hands it will get the job done every time.

This is a great little fire starter but the trick to avoiding a 10 minute fire-starting attempt is to use the right tinder. Dried grass and leaves work good but for better first time success use cotton balls, dryer lint or my favorite: cotton balls soaked in Vaseline.

(work the Vaseline into the cotton ball with your finger and then roll it back into a ball shape with your hands. To use the cotton ball grab each side and slowly pull the cotton ball apart into two pieces. You should have two fuzzy sections that resemble the hair on the little troll dolls. Place the cotton balls onto the ground with the fuzzy side up and then light with the fire steel. With practice they will light on the first strike.

I bought four of these and have them in the cars and every backpack...
